CLASSROOM LEARNING EXPERIENCES

VolcanicKED can bring earth science experiences to your school.

What's it like to be a scientist? What does a geologist do? What skills do you need?

VolcanicKED uses interactive activities that support skills and knowledge development.

We provide expert knowledge and resources to support learning.

ROCK IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION

What are the three main rock types, how do geologists identify them, and where do they form?

By the end of this session learners will be able to classify rock samples into three major rocks types by key characteristics and link these to their place of formation.

BANKS PENINSULA SAND VOLCANOES

Learn how the landscape of Banks Peninsula formed by building a scale sand model of the volcanoes. As learners build they learn the stages and ages of the different volcanic eruptives, landscape processes, and the dynamics of eruption styles through coke and mentos eruptions.

ASK AN EXPERT

VolcanicKED will come to your classroom and answer questions that your class may have developed from their investigative learning.

TAILORED TALKS

VolcanicKED will tailor-make a presentation for your classroom. We can focus this on your earth science learning goals, objectives, and individual questions.

MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA

How did the Canterbury Plains form?

What evidence can we see in the landscape today?

Rocks have been transported from the mountains to the sea. In this activity based learning your learners will describe and identify rock samples and then place them on a map of the Canterbury Plains - linking processes, sources and distance travelled.

ROCK, MINERAL, CRYSTAL, UNKNOWN SAMPLE IDENTIFICATION

Use expert knowledge and resources to identify learners’ samples.

*Christchurch based – can include use of binocular microscope

RIVER MODELLING

Investigate learning using a sand modelling table. Understand river flow, river types, formation of river features, influence of sediment, slope and flow.

*Christchurch based – due to table – but can suggest alternatives

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

What controls eruption styles?

What is the difference between an effusive and explosive eruption and what are the products?

How does change the vent influence eruption?

What is the influence of wind on eruptions and how do scientist use this in identifying past eruptions?

Investigations are supported by Mentos – diet cola eruptions.
