PROJECTS
OUR WORK
VolcanicKED has varied deliverables, from being in the classroom, guided walks in the field, to producing technical reports.
Check out below to see what we have been up to recently.

TE PĀTAKA O RĀKAIHAUTŪ BANKS PENINSULA GEOPARK
VolcanicKED works closely with the Geopark Trust assisting them in their progressive development. VolcanicKED's major work has been researching, designing and collaborating on the development of interpretation panels within developing Geosites.
VolcanicKED also supported the Geopark in supervising undergraduate research in UC's Geog 309 Research for Resilient Environments and Communities.
BANKS PENINSULA SPRINGS AND SEEPS
The Christchurch City Council engaged VolcanicKED to provide insight into the groundwater flow providing potable water to the community of Koukourarata. VolcanicKED provided a 3D GoogleEarth based assessment of groundwater flows and their predicted pathways within the volcanic strata, identifying catchment regions of the related springs, aiding in resource management.

UCx - edX ONLINE COURSE
Throughout 2021 VolcanicKED collaborated with the School of Earth and Environment, the team behind UCx, the UC video production team, and Frontiers Abroad Aotearoa in the creation of the edX course Foundational Field Skills for Earth and Environmental Sciences.
VolcanicKED developed the content, activities, and scripting, and Sam Hampton is one of the instructors throughout the course.
PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS AND TRIP
St Martins Primary and Somerfield School both took part in our rock identification and classification, where we bring a vast collection of rocks to be examined.
Somerfield also built and erupted our sand volcanoes of Banks Peninsula activity and went for an explore of the crater rim of Whakaraupo / Lyttelton.

SECONDARY SCHOOL TRIPS
In 2021 VolcanicKED had the opportunity to work with two high schools in Canterbury.
VolcanicKED joined Rolleston College on a trip around Banks Peninsula starting at Victoria Park and finishing at Birdlings Flat.
With Lincoln High School the focus was on the volcanics of the Lyttelton Volcanic Complex, visiting key sites and supporting observations with recent scientific studies and resources (i.e. dating).
Each days activities and locations were designed to provide students with opportunities to collect data and examples for their completion of:
AS91189 2.3 Investigate geological processes in a New
Zealand locality
AS91412 3.3 Investigate the evidence related to dating
geological event(s)

GUIDED WALKS
Sam aims to make these more than a walk, bringing his energetic field teaching styles to explain localities as you explore the surroundings.
BANKS PENINSULA WALKING FESTIVAL
Sam Hampton has been involved in the Banks Peninsula Walking Festival since 2013. The 2021 Walking Festival visited Kaioruru / Church Bay and Black Point, highlighting the formation of Lyttelton Harbour and the interplay between volcanism and sediments infilling Lyttelton Harbour 8-5.8 million years ago.
BANKS PENINSULA GEOPARK GUIDED OPEN DAY
Sam provided small group tours at the Ōhinetahi Geosite Open day, part of the 2021 Christchurch Heritage Festival.
